What If We Made a Million?
One of my favorite texts is in Matthew 25 where Jesus may have sat down with the apostles over a couple falafels or shawarmas, to explain the parable of the talents. This must have been a very important parable because the betrayal of Jesus and His arrest are only one chapter away. When people approach their last days, they share their most significant requests and admonitions.
Here Jesus told of three servants who were each entrusted by their master with varying amounts of money called talents. One got five, another two, and the other received one. Upon the master’s return the first two servants had doubled their allotment. Their master declared, “Well done good and faithful servants. You were faithful in few things; I will put you in charge of many; now enter into the joy of your Lord.” The man receiving one talent explained that he thought his master was a hard man and being afraid, he buried his one talent saying, “Here, have it back.”
This angered the master who declared, “You wicked, lazy servant. You should have at least placed my money in the bank to receive interest.” He then ordered the talent to be taken away and had the worthless servant thrown out. My thought is, what if the guy who got one talent used it wisely to make a million more? Nobody ever said there was a limit on doubling your original allotment.
Let’s all decide to have the faith, courage and willingness to see God do great and mighty things with us as a church. So what if we’re a small congregation in a tiny town without a curb or permanent traffic light. If you ever feel like we’re the church that got one talent, then go look at the back wall and be reminded of all the nations we’ve evangelized and the six churches we’ve helped plant. The work is not over, Black Canyon needs Jesus, so let’s make a million for our King.
